What is a community?

Thursday, December 13, 2007

The word Community is derived from the Latin Communitas which is defined by the Oxford Latin Dictionary as:

  1. Joint possession or use, participation, partnership, sharing
  2. Social relationship, fellowship, social ties, organized society
  3. Kinship
  4. Obligingness
Wikipedia has it's own definition of Community:
A community is a social group of organisms sharing an environment, normally with shared interests. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.

Where they also mention:
The word community is derived from the Latin communitas (meaning the same), which is in turn derived from communis, which means "common, public, shared by all or many"[1]. Communis comes from a combination of the Latin prefix con- (which means "together") and the word munis (which has to do with performing services).

And as you read for Communitas in Wikipedia:
Communitas is a Latin noun referring either to an unstructured community in which people are equal, or to the very spirit of community.
Communitas is an intense community spirit, the feeling of great social equality, solidarity, and togetherness. Communitas is characteristic of people experiencing liminality together. This term is used to distinguish the modality of social relationship from an area of common living.

In a simple understanding, having a community in a purest sense is an idea of coming together as a group through sharing a vision or pursuing a common goal.
Humans are social beings, with the need and desire to interact with others, and therefore form communities in order to network, to learn, to teach, to discuss, and overall, to interact. The same applies when you are building a technical community and this is called as User Group.

Wikipedia defines User Group:
A users' group (also users group or user group) is a type of club focused on the use of a particular technology, usually (but not always) computer-related.

To learn more on the evolution of the User Groups, read here.

My blog will be focusing on the User Groups and Creating better communities. Over the next few days, I will be discussing more on the benefits of participating in communities and increase your social network. With over 5 years of experience into social networks both online and off line, there are various matters that I have come across and each time has been a new learning right from being a member, a volunteer, to a leader. There has been lot of experimentations done and still being into it, every moment is to enjoy.

I will be glad to hear more from you and share your experiences and let's make a better world.
